Mower County- A Coordinated Collaborative Response to Domestic Violence

This Committee is the result of intentional planning, engaging individual members, developing a common vision and shared philosophy of centralizing the safety of adult victims and their children, providing comprehensive services and coordinating a response to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking and child abuse. Members of the Mower County Collaborative Response team have conducted local and national trainings on Effective Collaboration based upon this group’s success.
A needs assessment survey was conducted and results indicated a significant need for safe exchange and visitation services for victims and children of domestic violence and included countless incidents of domestic assault, intimidation, threats of abduction and other forms of violence within families served that never made it into the public record. Additional findings included the concern of victims over the response of the system to their calls for help in post-separation crisis, the threat of child abduction and on-going harassment and intimidation during exchanges.

Twin Cities Cheap

The past 3 years we have seen how the financial world will sacrifice the "little guy" at all costs to make their own profits. The small businesses (in the Twin Cities and nationwide) are especially vulnerable to the fluctuations of the economy and have been gravely hurt. Twin Cities Cheap (www.TwinCitiesCheap.com) has been developed in an effort to combat the unfair advertising climate where the "big box" large businesses and financial organizations overshadow our small business community. We understand that many small businesses also have small budgets for advertising. Twin Cities Cheap is for the ethical or socially-conscious small businesses who directly benefit their local economy and those who seek to invest in them. All funds have gone into and will continue to grow our site which helps shine the spotlight on our wonderful small business community.

Minnesota Neighborhood Development Center

The Minnesota Neighborhood Development Center "believes that residents, small businesses and neighborhood groups in all communities have the talent, energy and ability to engage and revitalize their own communities.

Since May of 1993—in eight ethnic communities and 25 low-income neighborhoods in Minnesota—NDC has helped build community support around the idea of creating, financing, and supporting resident-owned small businesses as a means of revitalizing inner city neighborhoods. There are more than 500 NDC supported businesses currently in operation. These businesses are building neighborhood economies--from within."

Growing Entrepreneurs

The Business & Entrepreneurial Services Center is an entity to educate and empower entrepreneurs in the lakes region of Minnesota. The Detroit Lakes campus is the only post-secondary education institution located in Becker County and primarily serves the Tri-County area of Becker, Mahnomen, and Hubbard counties. M State recognizes the need for economic development and revitalization in the tri-county area and we believe the key to moving people out of poverty is education. To this end, we are developing education opportunities in entrepreneurship that complete the bridge of education to employment. The tri-county average of persons 25 and older who are high school graduates slightly lags behind the state average while the tri-county average of persons 25 years old and older who hold a bachelor’s degrees or higher is significantly lower – a difference of 40% lower than the State average, (US Census Bureau, 2007).

Give & Take (website)

WHAT DO YOU KNOW? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW? These two questions are the foundation of Give & Take, an ongoing program that encourages individuals to share their personal knowledge and curiosity in a fun and engaging social setting. Economic and geographic trends point to increased social polarization in our communities. Give & Take is a program platform designed to combat this trend by providing a fun, educational, and empowering social setting where people with different backgrounds, expertise, and interest can gather and connect. Participants initially attend Give & Take out of curiosity. They return to Give & Take to meet new people, to learn from an unexpected line-up of presenters, and to experience an environment unlike any other in the Twin Cities. Since 2009, Give & Take has featured over 70 community members sharing their passions, projects, and ideas through short, entertaining multi-media presentations. Social games developed by Works Progress invite participants to interact, contributing to an effervescent atmosphere where unexpected and deep connections flourish.
