The World Record Plan

My plan is to break the world record for the world's largest leaf pile. When there is an opportunity to do something impressive, people will always collaborate. People who helped in this plan will be able to say to their children and grandchildren: "I was there! I helped build the world's largest pile of leaves!" A large park will be neccesary for the pile. After the contest, all the leaves will be in one place, ready to be hauled away.

Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed

"PTO is a not-for-profit (IRS 501C3) organization with the following mission: To challenge oppressive systems by promoting critical thinking and social justice. We organize an annual meeting that focuses on the work of liberatory educators, activists, and artists; and community organizers.

This organization developed from a series of four conferences held in Omaha, Nebraska from 1995-1998. The conference was based on the ideologies and works of Paulo Freire and Augusto Boal. Using pedagogy and theatre, they each worked with oppressed peoples of the world to develop critical literacies and actions to overcome social systems of oppression."

Consensus Building

"Consensus building (also called collaborative problem solving or collaboration) is essentially mediation of a conflict which involves many parties. Usually, the conflict also involves multiple, complex issues. Examples of consensus building efforts include the international negotiations over limiting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) to protect the ozone layer, or negotiations about limiting the emission of greenhouse gasses. While consensus building is probably most often used in environmental disputes, it is applicable to many other kinds of public policy disputes as well at the community, state, and international levels.

The Lotus

How can you lead authentically and effectively engage groups in collaborative processes towards sustainability?

The Lotus - A Practice Guide for Authentic Leadership in Strategic Sustainable Development - presents nine personal leadership capacities that authentic leaders find essential in their work when facilitating large-scale, complex, transformational change in organizations and communities. Furthermore, it suggests practices (ranging from contemplative and spiritual to physical, engaging both head, heart and hands) that help in developing your personal leadership capacities.

The complex, multi-faceted sustainability challenge that society faces calls for a strategic approach to sustainable development. Strategic planning processes towards sustainability in organisations and communities are oftentimes led by a facilitator or facilitative leader. We argue that planning processes of complex and transformational change, call for collaboration among stakeholders and for highly skilled facilitative leaders who are committed to the development of self, others and society.

Abundant Community

The Abundant Community stands for a different storyline, one that is about the gifts, hospitality and associational life of neighbors. We want to produce stories like this and support that segment of the journalism world that shares our belief in this storyline. There is a growing movement in the news world that believes journalism can play a civic role in building community. We want to report on that here and we want to hear your thoughts on this.

The Abundant Community has blogs, guidelines for action, book suggestions, and sections on great community projects.
