Social Connectedness and Health: A Literature Review

"This literature review forms part of the first stage of the Social Connectedness Project. Its aim is:

- To undertake a review of the literature focusing on the link between social isolation and well-being in potential target groups such as the elderly, young people, people with disabilities, and the seriously ill;

- To give an overview of strength-based community development strategies and, in particular, Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD);

- To provide an overview over community development projects that employed such a strategy; and to

- To elaborate possible themes that could encapsulate the spirit of the project."

The Girth of Mother Earth

The idea is to bring together the students that live in my residence hall, my fellow staff members, and sustainability groups at the University of Minnesota to make something beautiful out of waste. The plan is to get a great number of people to rake up fallen leaves, twigs, and other organic matter to make a figure of Mother Earth! We will use biodegradable garbage bags and other materials to construct and decorate her. She will serve as a reminder to respect the planet!

Victory for Water Quality!

The Victory Neighborhood Environmental Committee has stenciled 90 of the 250 catch basins in the neighborhood. We hung door hangers on the homes near the catch basins and published articles in our fall newsletter, e-newsletter and community newspaper about the importance of not allowing pollutants to enter the storm water system. We plan to stencil the remaining catch basins and have residents post signs in their yards reminding neighbors to keep the catch basins clear.

Raking for Zephyr Nordic

The Mahtomedi High School Nordic Ski Team has organized a major leaf raking event for community members, many of which live on the shores or watershed of White Bear Lake. The Nordic Team will receive donations from the customers, and the team volunteers will help collect and remove tons of leaves and organic debris, much of which would otherwise find its way into White Bear Lake.
