Redesigning MN: Coming Together

Minnesota is about to change dramatically. As the state’s 1.3 million baby-boomers begin to retire over the next two decades, tax rolls will shrink. In this hour-long, first episode of the "Redesigning MN" series, we’ll explore what many government officials have nicknamed the “New Normal” and look at how it will impact state and local government, and ultimately, the lives of Minnesotans.

Plus, we’ll examine two fundamental ways to “redesign” and “innovate” government services—that is, through consolidation and collaboration.  It’s already happening across the state.  See how well it’s working in “Redesigning MN: Coming Together.” http://www.redesigningmn.org/

tpt is very happy to be able to present this program in hopes of starting many conversations about innovating government services in the years to come.
Thanks to everyone for your comments!

What do you think state and local government need to "fix" to save money and provide better outcomes--more value for the shrinking tax dollars they'll have to pay for services?

This was an excellent program that raises great questions. I want to be a part of the ongoing dialog.

Good premier on TPT last night

I thought the initial show was great, with good examples of redesign in action. However somewhat dissipointed to find only 3 (now 4) comments at this site. The reports are a good resource, but "how" to bring people together to discuss and act on them seems to be the weakest link. I know my Mayor has been involved from the start, but not sure how to support his efforts with meaningful dialogue.

About the “Redesigning MN” Series-The project is designed to spark meaningful dialogue among Minnesotans about the dramatic shift in the state’s demographics and the impact it will have on state and local government, and ultimately, the lives of the people who live here.

Collaborating across the "silo" lines

I'm intrigued by the fact that there are a number of groups and initiatives where the people involved share a common passion: a better Minnesota society.

Some are Minneapolis-centric, Twin Cities regional, and others cover the entire state.

All talk about some version of... better housing, better jobs, better transportation, better neighborhoods, better cities, better communities.... all co-related aspects of a better society, yes?

A FEW SCATTERED EXAMPLES:

...The Itasca Project, its members, advisers, and the various initiatives that have spun off from it

...Corridors of Opportunity

...Twin Cities Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)

...Grow! Minnesota and the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce as well as all the local Chambers

...AccelerateMN (launching May 9th 2012) www.AccelerateMN.org

...Name the one you are familiar with!

And the list goes on.

All good! All effective to some degree!

Who can rise up to become the stewards of a better society across Minnesota?

Collaborating across the silos... engaging a higher level of dialogue... this must be part of the revolution for "redesigning Minnesota." Would you agree?

P.S. It's a scalable idea... not just for MN... scale it up or down based on your level of influence.

I think a big first question

I think a big first question for me is whom is going to fill all of the open positions... this will then lead to a discussion of how can we get expenses but not services?

There will be thousands of retiring baby boomers, do we have enough youth to fill in?

Our thanks to the handful of folks who've started this conversation. Now tell your friends to tell your friends...The discussion can't happen without people willing to reach out to others.
