InCommons Collaboration Challenge

It takes a community to raise one child

New Pathways collaborates with several local organizations to address the issue of rural homelessness. Through our partnership with Lakes & Pines, CAC, Rise, The Refuge, County Family Services for our service area, Lutheran Social Services, Salvation Army, Rum River Recovery, Ministerial Committee of Cambridge, Bridging, and MACV we are able to address most barriers to housing for the families in our service area of Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, and Pine, Counties.

Describe your locally-based collaboration and the problem it sought to address

New Pathways collaborates with several local organizations to address the issue of rural homelessness. Through our partnership with Lakes & Pines, CAC, Rise, The Refuge, County Family Services for our service area, Lutheran Social Services, Salvation Army, Rum River Recovery, Ministerial Committee of Cambridge, Bridging, and MACV we are able to address most barriers to housing for the families in our service area of Chisago, Isanti, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, and Pine, Counties.

Tell us about the community in which this collaboration took place

The 5 county area that New Pathways serves is very rural. Limited resources are available to those in need within these areas. Our collaborations are essential to the livelihood of those we serve.

Partnership

Who was involved in co-creating or implementing your collaboration (other organizations, leaders, community members, etc.)?

The best resource that we have as a community organization is the service provider fairs that occur a couple of times a year. During these fairs, social service providers get together to let the families within our communities know that they exist and who they serve. During these fairs, we also learn about each other.

To what extent does your collaboration involve partnerships that are outside or cross traditional organizational or sector boundaries?

100% of our partnerships are essential to the needs of our homeless families. Each family comes in with their own barriers and needs. Knowing and having the partnership with the organization that matches their needs is necessary.

What makes your locally-based collaboration innovative and unique?

By utilizing the entire spectrum of services that are available in our service area, we are able to ensure our families receive the assistance they need to thrive.

Did you take risks in establishing this collaboration? Explain

How did this collaboration differ from the normal way of doing your work?

Without these collaborations, our families would be left unaddressed barriers they came to us with. Family Education and Case Management are wonderful tools, but sometimes families need more advocacy and options.

Impact

How do you know your collaboration has been effective?

The collaborations are effective because our families have been referred to appropriate resources and 96% of our families have found success in locating and maintaining permanent housing for at least 6 months.

What progress or impact has been made?

These collaborations allow us to establish relationships for families with service providers. They are able to continue with that family after they leave our program to help sustain stability.
